‘Thrilled’: Aboriginal Housing Victoria and Breathe project named finalist in Premier’s Design Awards

Aboriginal Housing Victoria’s (AHV) first multi-unit residential venture, designed by Breathe with First Nations collaboration and leadership, has been named a finalist in the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards.

The project, named Umarkoo Wayi – Ganbu Guljin, is a medium-rise development described by ArchitectureAU as “both modern and efficient, delivering a high-yield and increasing diversity”.

AHV CEO Darren Smith said he was proud of the organisation for being recognised among more than a dozen award finalists, celebrating the state’s designers creating positive change for communities and businesses.

“We are thrilled. We engaged Breathe not only because we recognised the need to significantly increase our available housing stock, but also because we knew they would execute the task beautifully – and they did,” he said.

“We worked side-by-side with Breathe throughout this project, providing direction on culturally appropriate design. That is why it stands out as a shining example of what community housing can and should be.”
