Aboriginal Housing Victoria (AHV) proudly hosted its annual NAIDOC Family Day on Thursday 10 July at the Aborigines Advancement League, marking a significant milestone in the event’s 24-year history. This was the first time the celebration moved from its long-standing home at Collingwood Children’s Farm, and the first time it was held on a Thursday during NAIDOC Week.
Despite wet weather and the change in venue, the event welcomed approximately 1300 guests, with a strong turnout from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and hundreds of allies. The new location provided greater accessibility, more space for activities, and improved transport and parking options.
The day featured performances by Indigenous Outreach Projects, Djirri Djirri Dancers, and Mitch Tambo, who brought families together through music and dance. While Ganga Giri and Yirrmal were unable to perform, the event remained lively and engaging.
Outdoor sports including football, netball, soccer, softball, and boomerang throwing were well attended, and new additions such as the kids’ talent stage and expanded sports clinics were enthusiastically received.
AHV was supported by over 50 volunteers from organisations including Juno, KraftHeinz, NAB, and Collarts, who assisted with guest check-in, face painting, arts and crafts, and the distribution of 500+ show bags filled with donated items from Softball Australia, Pinchapoo, CleverPatch, and others. Raffle prizes from Crumpler, Instax, Fujifilm, and Sea Life Aquarium helped keep guests engaged throughout the day.
Feedback from community members and partner organisations has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding the new venue’s accessibility and layout. AHV plans to return to the Aborigines Advancement League in 2026, with plans to build on this year’s success.
More details about our NAIDOC Day 2026 will come out in the new year! Thanks to all those who attended and supported!
